Beirut Bombing: 27 Years

Today is the 27th anniversary of the Beirut Bombings…Some say it was the beginning of the War on Terror.
My father is a Colonel in the Marine Corps, he was in Beirut at the time of the bombing. He was just blocks away from the barracks that were hit. Thankfully my dad was spared, but 241 other Marines, soldiers and sailors were not.

It was a peace-keeping mission.

BEIRUT, LEBANON – In 1983, a suicide bomber driving a truck loaded with explosives at Lebanon’s Beirut International Airport killed 241 U.S. Marines and Sailors. Almost simultaneously, another attack two miles away killed 58 French Paratroopers. The U.S. Marines were part of a multi-national force overseeing the Palestinian withdrawal from Lebanon. A brutal bombing in Beirut on this date in history, October 23, 1983.
