Paying it Forward: Ordinary Heroes

I’m working on a new segment for LEX 18, that will focus on the good in people, those who “pay it forward” without asking for anything in return. The people who do nice things for others, just because.

It’s called “Ordinary Heroes.” And the idea came from this quote:

“Ordinary heroes walk among us with uncommon bravery and profound care. Some wear uniforms and carry badges, some do not. But all wear the armor of integrity, compassion, courage, and honor. Our greatest heroes know that great things come from a series of small actions. They know how to protect and defend so that others may live. Their love, compassion, and bravery are God’s touch upon humanity.”

So to generate story ideas, of course I went to Facebook! I posted a status update on our LEX 18 fanpage, and within minutes I had dozens and dozens of posts. People telling their stories of someone who has done something small, or even something big, to make their life better. It was truly touching. Especially in a world where I cover death and destruction on a daily basis, it was refreshing to be reminded there are still good people in this world.

It doesn’t have to be something earth-shattering. It can be your mailman who goes the extra mile to bring your mail to your door when you have trouble getting out of the house. It can be the lady in front of you at the grocery store who helped pay your bill. Or it can be someone anonymous, who you may never meet, you may never be able to thank, who did something so selfless for you. These are the stories I want to hear about. So tell me, how has someone made your life better? Feel free to post here or email me, nburdine@lex18.com.

To show you some of the heart-warming gestures I’ve already heard, here are some Facebook posts from last week.

Nichole Caskey I once went through the drive-thru at McDonald’s for breakfast and discovered, upon pulling to the window to pay, that my meal had already been paid for by the driver in front of me. It turns out that he not only paid for my meal, but also the car behind me as well. I have since done the same thing several times because I want other people to have the same feeling of happiness that I did that day.
Kimberly Michelle Chapman Erskine Yes…my friend Charm Wingate, is paying it forward. She began a fb group Personal Challenges with a Purpose and since March the group has grown to over 850 women and men that are motivating and inspiring one another to become fit, fine, fabulous, focused with faith. It has been the best thing that ever happened to me. I’ve lost 34 pounds and feel great. We started a clean eating/exercise challenge 8/1 and there are about 40-50 people that signed up. Charm got a vision from God and has put the plan into action. So many people are coming out of the woodworks to exercise and eat better by the encouragement of all of the groups members. It is truly an awesome thing. You should check it out!!

Maureen Elkins I received in the mail a Christmas Card in March that simply said “it is Christmas time” from some friends. In the card was a $100 Krogers gift card. To this day I have no idea from whom it came…but I had soo much fun spending that which was only for things that I wouldn’t normally buy for myself. I loved it !!!

Amy Brummett Rodney Parsons paid it forward. Before he passed away he always paid for the car behind him in the drive thru and encouraged others to do so also and it makes me smile to read all the comments about people having their meal paid for and know that maybe one of those people knew the amazing sprit that made Rodney the man he was. Rodney passed away not to long ago and I am glad to see other people carrying on his act of kindnes.

Carla Dykes Daniel A couple of months before Christmas one year my ex husband left. I had 5 small children to take care of on my own so I didn’t know how I was going to manage Christmas at all. A few nights before Christmas I came home from work there was a christmas tree, decorations, food and gifts for all the children on my porch.Till this day 20 yrs later I still don’t know who done that for us. I still want to say Thank You. Hope you are reading this!!!

Carrie Hampton Gaston I had a couple do an amazingly generous thing for me on August 6, 2009…they paid for me to get braces on my teeth. I didn’t ask, and they didn’t really even know me that well. They paid for them and didn’t want anything in return. I didn’t find out who they were until I had the braces for 6 months. They are two of the most generous, loving people I have ever met. Christie Hughes A few weeks ago after having surgery I was bored surfing the net and came across a news story about Birth-Parent Finders on Facebook and shot them my story. Within 15 minutes I was on the phone with the owner of the company and he had found my father whom I had been looking for for over 15 years. I was amazed to learn that he had done it for free based on my surgery. This weekend we are going to Indiana to meet my family, my brothers, and everyone else that wants to meet us! Brenda Cockerham I think I see so many good things because I work with around 200 volunteers a month throughout our county, a lady in River works every week to take food to her neighbors and see that they are taken care of, she coordinates activities for the community routinely, she has created such a positive community spirit, her community is rising up and making some accomplishments in several areas.

Brenda Cockerham Another lady I can think if coordinates an annual cleanup and connects it to the youth in the community, their club then fundraises and sees that the participating youth have scholarhips to help them through school…and now their community is documentalbly cleaner!

Brenda Cockerham Another lady, gives around 20+ hours a week to see that 400 people in two counties recieve food to help them through the month..each of these are in different communities in Johnson County…how many did you say you wanted?
