It’s been called the first act of terrorism: The bombings of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon on October 23rd, 1983. 241 Marines and American service members were killed in the bombing. A cowardly act of terrorism – on our armed forces who truly came in peace.
Today, let’s remember our military who never forget that day. My dad, USMC Colonel Burdine was there when those people were killed. Thankfully, my dad was not at the barracks and he made it home. While he was in Lebanon for my birth and I didn’t meet him until I was 6 months old when my mother and I flew to Athens, Greece…I am lucky. My father made it home, other families lost their loved ones. My dad’s best friends didn’t come home. Hundreds of others didn’t make it back.
The attacks are barely mentioned these days. Lots of people don’t even know about them. So it’s important that we do.
