Man Says His Wife’s Murder Was Mercy Killing

Police in Laurel County say a man shot his wife to death early Wednesday morning, and that the man told them it was a mercy killing.

Police say Ernest “Chris” Chumbley shot and killed his wife, Virginia around 2:30 a.m. at their home on Green Lawn Subdivision. Deputies say Chumbley called 911 and told them he shot his wife.

Chumbley talked to LEX 18 from jail Wednesday, where he confessed to killing his wife, but he said he did it because she told him to. Chumbley says his wife has been fighting cancer for years and asked him to put her out of her misery.

Chumbley is in the Laurel County Detention Center facing a murder charge.
