Police released the name of a man killed in a shooting that occurred Sunday night in Northeast D.C.
According to police, officers were called to the 900 block of 3rd Street around 10:20 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of the sound of gunshots in the area. Once police arrived on the scene they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday morning, police identified the victim as 36-year-old Timothy Bing of Northeast D.C.
Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a black male wearing a black and white shirt with blue jeans.
The violence is disturbing to everyone who lives on this street, especially because at the time of the shooting, a boy was sitting outside in the kiddie pool right next to the victim.
The boy’s grandfather told WUSA9 that his daughter and grandson witnessed it all.
“He took it kind of hard though…dude shot him three times, then he reached down and he shot him two more times. So they meant to kill him.”
Just a few doors down, Kevin Melton was one of the first people outside after he heard gunshots.
“There were about four gunshots,” remembers Melton. “I came outside, there was a gentleman face down. We tried to see if we could save him but unfortunately it didn’t happen.”
His next concern was the boy who saw the horrific crime.
“The fact that he’s OK is what we all wanted to know this morning. We now know that, we just hope D.C. police are able to find more information for us.”
Police don’t have a solid description of the shooter and hope tips and other witnesses will come forward. Residents do, too. “It’s sad because this neighborhood has actually gone through a lot. But as you can see it has come about. I do not want to let something like this detract from what I think is a very good neighborhood,” says Melton. “A lot of people are working very, very hard to make this a really good place.”
The neighborhood has seen its fair share of crime in the past 24 hours. The shooting is about a half a mile from an early Sunday morning shooting and robbery on the 100 block of M Street NE that left the victim in stable condition.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or text info to 50411.
