Shooting at Reston Hospital

A man with an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound fired a round of gunshots at the doors of the Reston Hospital Center and then again inside of the hospital Wednesday morning, Fairfax County police said.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. when a 52-year-old Loudoun County man arrived at the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body.

Police said he got out of his car and parked it. He attempted to get into the hospital for treatment, however the doors were locked. That is when he decided to shoot at the glass doors in order to gain entrance, authorities said.

Once inside the hospital he approached staff. The man then displayed his gun and allegedly fired another round of shots inside the hospital. Nobody was hit or injured.

Hospital staff called security. They were able to convince him to put the weapon down, police added. The man was then given medical attention.

“When we were called all we heard was there was a gun shot wound in the ER, so you go take care of it.” Dave Smith, a respiratory nurse said.

It wasn’t until after Dave smith and a team of doctors and nurses treated him – that they heard the whole story.

Police said he was transported to another hospital facility, where he is in stable condition. “Once you hear chatter and the story you kind of move because you have patients,” Smith stated.

Police haven’t said why this man started shooting in the first place – but for those who work here – it’s another reminder of the world in which we live. “It’s very scary but in this day it’s not uncommon.

The man was taken to Inova Fairfax hospital’s trauma center. The investigation is ongoing. His name has not been released yet.

The hospital released the following statement regarding the shooting Wednesday morning:
