We’re enjoying a nice warm-up in the DC area, but the cold weather fun continues with a bikini contest in Romania and a celebrity polar bear plunge in Michigan! But leave it to Frank Underwood to heat things up on the political talk show circuit.
♦♦♦ But first, I want to start with former First Lady, Nancy Reagan. She passed away yesterday at the age of 94. I loved the love she and President Reagan had. So much so, that at my wedding, one of my friends read a love letter Reagan wrote to Nancy on board Air Force One in 1983.
Dear First Lady
I know tradition has it that on this morning I place cards Happy Anniversary cards on your breakfast tray. But things are somewhat mixed up. I substituted a gift & delivered it a few weeks ago.
Still this is the day, the day that marks 31 years of such happiness as comes to few men. I told you once that it was like an adolescent’s dream of what marriage should be like. That hasn’t changed.
You know I love the ranch but these last two days made it plain I only love it when you are there. Come to think of it that’s true of every place & every time. When you aren’t there I’m no place, just lost in time & space.
I more than love you, I’m not whole without you. You are life itself to me. When you are gone I’m waiting for you to return so I can start living again.
Happy Anniversary & thank you for 31 wonderful years.
I love you,
Your Grateful Husband
Love letter from
Ronald Reagan to his First Lady Nancy Reagan
Rest in peace, Mrs. Reagan.
♦♦♦ President Frank Underwood was on Meet the Press Sunday, discussing the 2016 Presidential race and House of Cards.
I haven’t yet watched it – so please – no spoilers. However I did get a special surprise in the mail. Now, I know journalists are not supposed to endorse candidates and technically, I shouldn’t tell you who I’m voting for, but let’s be honest. FU 2016 is where it’s at. This swag bag was a nice surprise at work this morning!
Season 4 of House of Cards debuted Friday…binge-watching was no doubt an American past-time this weekend.
♦♦♦ And take a look at this: it’s being called the “ghost Octopus.” Scientists discovered the creature near Hawaii’s Necker Island, 3 miles below. The undersea vehicle used to find it is called the Okeanos Explorer and researchers posted this video of it on YouTube. This octopus lacks pigment cells, that’s what gives it the ghost-like appearance.
♦♦♦ In Romania, they apparently hold beauty contests on the slopes…in bikinis. These brave beauties skied and snow-boarded down mountains in their bathing suits showing off their skills, even competing in some obstacle courses, all in 12-degree weather.
♦♦♦ Lady Gaga raised the stakes though and took the plunge this weekend into frigid Lake Michigan waters at a fundraiser for Special Olympics. Her fiance, Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney (meow) also tagged along for the Chicago Polar Plunge.
♦♦♦The Iditarods kicked off this weekend in Alaska, even though organizers had some obstacles to make sure it actually happened: Not enough snow! Snow had to be sent on a train from Anchorage. That did the trick, and the 85 teams of mushers and dogs took off on their 1,000 mile journey. So cute. I just love how determined they are!
♦♦♦ The Royal family all together for the first time! How adorable! Princess Charlotte and Prince George enjoyed a ski vacation with their parents. And the world is swooning.
♦♦♦ Remember this lady? Ms. Virginia McLaurin? She’s probably one of the most adorable people in the world. The 106-year-old captured our hearts as she danced in the White House with President Obama and the First Lady. Turns out, she was onto something! Chicago researchers say Virginia is so spry, because dancing can help keep you young. The study shows four months of Latin dancing twice a week, helps put keep women over the age of 65 young and healthy.
♦♦♦ I’ve already posted your Monday Motivation, but here’s a quote I really identify with. Tennessee girls, we love our whiskey.
♦♦♦ And here’s your “aw” for the day: This is Jaxen – he’s a huge hockey fan and loves skating on the rink in his backyard.
And his rink needs to be cleaned up, he just hops onto his homemade Zamboni and makes it smooth again.
The 9-year-old kid made the Zamboni out of his tricycle. Now, he’s using his new-found fame to raise money and awareness for Type One Diabetes.
♦♦♦ It’s Women’s History Month – and at WUSA9 we are asking people to tell us who the most influential women are in their lives… AND – we are telling viewers a little bit about the women of WUSA9. The super-talented Murugi Thande put the pieces together.
♦♦♦ Last but certainly not least, the GOAT Peyton Manning is set to announce his retirement today. I love that man.
He’s going out as a champion after winning Super Bowl 50, leaving behind an incredible legacy and an 18-year-career.
Congrats Peyton, I can’t wait to see where you end up next…hopefully it’s back on good old Rocky Top!
He changed the game forever and we are forever grateful.
