Pools are open!

D.C. public pools officially opened on Saturday to kick off Memorial Day weekend.

Everyone at Banneker pool is hoping for a safe summer, but to make that happen, it takes more than just hoping.

Abbey’s Hope Charitable Foundation, an organization that helps education parents about drowning, talked to us about what you need to know before jumping in the pool.

Alan Korn with Abbey’s Hope Charitable Foundation says one the biggest mistakes parents make is just not paying attention. Someone should be watching the kid in the pool at all times.

The charity offers a took to make this a little easier. It’s called the Watch Dog Program.

Child drownings are down by 11% nationwide. The bad news is drowning is still the leading cause of accidental death of children under the age of four.
